Krista Rey is an award-winning Manitoba singer. Since Krista was old enough to speak, her love of music and her passion for singing have driven her to continue pursuing new opportunities to share her voice with the world. She feels most at home on stage with a microphone in hand singing the country tunes she grooves to while driving in her car.
Although she appreciates rock, for as long as she can remember, country music is in Krista’s soul. As she was growing up, her family often had Patsy Cline, Crystal Gayle, Johnny Cash and Reba McEntire playing. Today, she notes Keith Urban, Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Paul Brandt, Terri Clark, Sara Evans and Phil Vassar inspire her with their soulful music that tells a story and creates a universal connection. One reason Krista loves country music: it helps people reach conclusions they might not otherwise reach. She also appreciates many local artists.
Krista is proud to be Métis and embraces her culture through performing, acting as a role model and sitting on youth committees. Along with regular performances at various cultural events and schools, she has been a proud Adult Ambassador representing the Métis People Pavilion for Folklorama, Winnipeg's annual celebration of culture, since 2004. Krista has contributed to the Aboriginal Musician's Association Artist Showcase – Volume One – 2006 and Métis Express Live album for the Manitoba Métis Federation Bereavement Fund.
She has competed in a number of local and regional competitions. Most recently, Krista placed third in APTN’s 2007 Aboriginal Icon contest. Her performance of an original song was broadcast on television. In 2006, Krista was the first place winner in the 20th Annual NCI Jam. You may also have seen Krista Rey place as a finalist in the Bud Country Talent Search.
Krista is a classically trained singer and pianist. The Brandon University School of Music and the Royal Conservatory of Music have helped her hone and further develop her vocal capabilities. For several years, Krista competed as a solo artist in the Winnipeg Music Festival. In 2005, she received the Alice F. "LAL" Mills Memorial Trophy. She has also performed in the Mountain School Division Musical Festival (Vocal – 10 years), Piano (13 years) and for the Portage la Prairie and District Music and Arts Festivals (6 years).
Krista is a fixture on the Manitoba music scene and has performed in a number of communities throughout the province. She is happy to contribute her talents to fundraising events for good causes, celebrations of community and culture and weddings.
She has accompanied, directed and performed with a number of Manitoba choirs, including the Central Manitoba Youth Choir and the Provincial Honour Choir. Krista currently sings with Pot Pourri choir under the direction of Joanne Mercier.
A graduate of the University of Manitoba faculty of Social Work, Krista's day job has her working with youth in the community and supporting them in becoming successful individuals.
